Poetic devices in the poem The Next War?

The extended metaphor which permeates the poem is that Death is a soldier's constant companion. The soldiers are on friendly terms even though Death is disgusting in his habits. The personified Death took the soldiers killed by other soldiers so no soldier is likely to rally against Death. Death has a purpose on the battle fields throughout time and even into the future. Every soldier must be prepared to look Death in the eye without displaying malice or fear.
